HEED WARNINGS OF FLICKER
"There is a distinct need for facilities managers to be educated in these simple warning signs" says fault investigation and analysis consultant, Marc Dekenah.
A public entertainment and games centre ignored the warning signs of flickering lights and only called in their electrical maintenance concern after suffering burnt out wiring and electrical/electronic devices. Although a loose electrical connection was quickly identified as the possible cause, locating it proved beyond standard methods and instrumentation.
Faultlink International has developed unusual testing methods specifically for situations like this and not only speedily located a defective switch, but also revealed a second fault which may have otherwise remained undetected. This averted not one, but two possible occurrences of electrical fire which carries the normal threat of loss of structure and, ultimately, life.
"Although pressing panic buttons should be avoided, the sheer number of electrically related fires seems to not have put any strain on concerns offering power quality services" he added.
He closed by saying "In many instances flicker is nothing more than an annoyance. In others it is your electrical system trying to tell you there is something going or has gone horribly wrong! Appropriate testing is the only means to know the difference".
